3250 kW DER Interconnection & System Upgrades

Project Detail

Project Location: Spring Grove, IL

Challenge:

  • Proper relay coordination to prevent transient over-voltages exceeding ComEd’s 34kV system ratings.
  • Delta H.S transformer winding compliance for safe interconnection.
  • Integration of system automation, including new Intellirupter installation and primary metering at the customer site.
  • Real estate acquisitions, ROW approvals, and permit procurement for required infrastructure modifications.

Action:

  • Conducted an Interconnection Facilities Study to determine distribution upgrades required for integrating the 3250-kW inverter-based PV facility with the distribution system.
  • Installed seven poles, including two replacements, a tap pole, and a 34kV guy pole with arresters at the customer site.
  • Deployed 34kV overhead DA Intellirupter, 34kV pole-mounted primary meter, and a 34kV 600A normally closed Pole Top Switch (PTS) to support grid automation.
  • Extended 150’ of 34kV 3-phase 477 B AL overhead line and reconfigured the existing 34kV line automation for seamless integration.
  • Modified TSS193 relay settings, coordinated system protection measures, and performed post-installation testing at TSS193 and the DER site.
  • Submitted IFA & IFC packages, including distribution design (DE0072), MRs for long-lead items, ROW/easement documentation, and permit applications to ensure regulatory compliance.

DST Value Addition:

  • Optimized interconnection design, integrating protection requirements to prevent transient over-voltages and ensure system stability.
  • Executed relay setting modifications at TSS193, minimizing the impact of DER integration on the existing grid infrastructure.
  • Streamlined permitting, ROW approvals, and real estate coordination, accelerating project timelines and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensured compliance with industry standards, managing the full interconnection lifecycle from design validation to final testing, and providing a turnkey engineering solution for PV facility integration.
